What are LHAs?

In recent years, I've noticed that we've all become a lot savvier to different skincare ingredients. While previous generations may have slathered on the latest face cream sold to them by their local beauty counter, we now like to do our research into what's in the products we put on our face. The main ingredients I've noticed that people are eager to include in their regime are AHAs and BHAs.

As you're probably aware Alpha Hydroxy Acids and Beta Hydroxy Acids speed up cell turnover and gently exfoliate the skin without harsh abrasives, creating a smoother skin texture. The difference between the two is that AHAs (such as Glycolic Acid) are water-soluble, while BHAs (like Salicylic Acid) are oil-soluble, making them better at clearing out clogged pores. However, there's another acid family that is becoming increasingly included in products but is far less heard of: LHAs, or Lipo Hydroxy Acids.

So what are LHAs?

LHAs work in a similar way to BHAs, making them a great option for those with oily and acne-prone skins. They work to unclog pores of the build up of excess oils and impurities, helping to clear and prevent breakouts, as well as improving the appearance of blackheads and enlarged pores.

Why would I choose an LHA over a BHA?

BHAs are fantastic at smoothing irregular skin texture, but due to their strength, not every skin can tolerate regular use. In my personal experience, I have found that certain products containing Salicylic Acid leave my chin (which is prone to blackheads) extremely dry, tight and sensitive.Lipo Hydroxy Acids are a great alternative for oily, problematic skins that are also prone to sensitivity. They are much more lipophilic, meaning they support the natural lipids of the skin and maintain a healthy barrier function that can be disrupted by over use of other acids. They are also active at the same pH level as the skin (pH 5.5), which means that cause fair less irritation or sensitivity. If you're looking for a gentler method of chemical exfoliation, LHAs could be for you.
