The Importance of SPF During Winter

Temperatures are dropping and as we countdown to the big day, everyone is hoping for a picture perfect "White Christmas". During the colder weather, the thought of regularly applying your sunscreen is probably the last thing on your mind. But you may want to re-think that, as we take a closer look at the importance of wearing SPF during winter.

Why should SPF be worn every day?

By now, everyone should be aware that a broad-spectrum SPF should be worn every day. But there are still some people that only wear protective sunscreen during summer, or even just when they are abroad - shocking, we know! Here's why SPF should be worn every day, including winter.

Anti-ageing

Sun exposure has been highlighted as more damaging to skin than smoking and pollution and it is estimated that around three quarters of lines and wrinkles tend to be caused by sun damage. If you want to protect your skin against the signs of ageing, you guessed it SPF!

Pigmentation

Those who struggle with dark spots, pigmentation and melasma should be applying SPF daily. If you have spent a considerable amount of time and money on de-pigmentation products and treatments, it could all be thrown away if you fail to keep your skin protected from the sun. Therefore, SPF is a necessity!

Active ingredients

Active ingredients such as Vitamin A and exfoliating acids can make skin more sensitive to UV rays, making the use of an SPF imperative every day, even in winter.

Skin damage

Of course the damaging effects of sun exposure have been widely reported and investigated, with the only proven way of reducing UV exposure being to stay out of the sun and keep skin protected with a broad-spectrum SPF.

UVA & UVB rays

UVA rays are referred to as “ageing rays as they contribute to the ageing of skin. These rays penetrate through to the deeper layers of skin and cause DNA damage.UVB rays are referred to as “burning rays as they burn the superficial layers of the skin and contribute to the development of skin cancer.Although UVB rays may not be as visible or prevalent during the winter, UVA rays are present all year. That's right, 365 days a year, rain or shine. So wear your SPF!

Why is SPF important in winter?

As we've already mentioned (constantly!), SPF is imperative every day of the year. Here's why SPF is just as important during winter as any other time of the year.

Snow & ice can increase UV damage

How many of you have been dazzled by the low winter sun on your commute to work in the morning?Although this might not be what you'd expect when the temperature has dropped below freezing, but according to the Environmental Protection Agency, snow and ice on the ground can reflect up to 80% of UV rays.

Hitting the slopes

At this time of year, many people take off to the slopes to celebrate Christmas and New Year. Bear in mind that the higher up the mountain you are, the more sun you are exposed to.According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, an altitude of 9,000 to 10,000 feet, UV radiation can be 35-45% more intense than at sea level. So make sure you pack plenty of SPF!

With hundreds of sunscreen options available, all you have to do is find one you enjoy using and you can take care of your skin every day. Choose from creams, gels, serums, tinted, oil-free, fragrance-free and even invisible sprays.
