Exercise & Skincare: What You Need To Know

Sweat and body heat generated when exercising are major players in altering the skin's delicate barrier. Those who work out on a regular basis at high intensity levels are more susceptible to disrupting this balance. We receive many questions surrounding skincare and exercise, like when is the best time to do my AM routine if I'm exercising in the morning? Can I wear makeup whilst exercising? Should I apply my skincare products before or after exercising?

During exercise, our heart rate increases, bringing a flow of blood to the surface of the skin and oxygen and nutrients with it. That's why exercise is so beneficial for skin and you see that post-workout “glow. Here's our top hints and tips for those gym bunnies that love to exercise

Exercising in the morning

If you cleansed your face the night before and completed your nightly routine, there's no need to do your morning routine before you go to the gym. After all you are just going to sweat it all off! So just a splash of tepid water on the face and neck will do and gently pat dry.Try applying a hydrating mist such as DMK Herb and Mineral Mist, to hydrate your skin before and after your workout rather than relying on thicker moisturisers. If you suffer with blemish or spot-prone skin, try applying Clinisept Plus Aftercare directly after your workout. The anti-microbial technology disinfects skin and has a skin neutral pH so it won't disrupt your skin's delicate barrier.

Exercising later in the day

If you've been at work, school or just out for the day, we always advise removing any makeup prior to exercise. As you workout and you produce sweat, this will mix with the dirt, makeup and pollution that you have accumulated throughout the day, which then sits on your skin throughout your workout. If you feel self-conscious about a barefaced, makeup-free workout, look for a mineral-based makeup, which we always recommend for acne-prone skin, as it doesn't clog pores. In particular, we love Oxygenetix Oxygenating Breathable Foundation; this foundation conceals flaws whilst also healing the complexion. The formula is so gentle that it is safe for those with acne, rosacea and psoriasis.

Exercising outside

As already mentioned, we recommend removing all traces of makeup before you start exercising, but if you are exercising outdoors, you need to think about protecting your skin against damaging UV rays.If you're in a rush, a physical SPF is your best option as there is no need to wait around for it to absorb. We recommend NeoStrata Sheer Physical Protection SPF50, which offers sheer and lightweight protection in an oil-free formula. It also contains an antioxidant-rich blend of Green Tea Extract, Lactobionic Acid and Vitamin E, to help maintain skin's natural collagen, as well as preserving healthy DNA for youthful looking skin.Alternatively, apply your normal broad-spectrum SPF at least 30 minutes before exposure to the outdoor elements. We love Mesoestetic Mesoprotech Antiaging Facial Sun Mist SPF 50+ thanks to it's innovative light-textured mist formula that ensures the entire face is protected. It also contains Vitamin E for an antioxidant and protective action and Mesoestetic's Collagen pro-47 formula, which protects and increases the presence of high quality collagen for smoother and firmer skin.

Exercising after sunset

As before, you need to ensure you have removed all traces of makeup and can apply a hydrating mist before you workout. Once you have completed your workout, you should go straight into your normal nightly routine.

Gym clothing

It's a good idea to get out of your workout clothes as soon as possible, this will help to prevent breakouts from sweaty fabric remaining on your skin. This is especially important if you are prone to back or chest acne. You should shower as soon a possible to remove all sweat and pollution from the skin surface on the entire body. Not sure where to start when it comes to skincare?
