Acne in a nutshell – Part One

AcneWe’ve had lots of Acne sufferers in again this month, so thought it was time we looked at a simplified description of the ‘whys’ and ‘wherefores’ of Acne. Acne is incredibly complicated and the following is a quick guide only. We have fantastic results with our Acne treatments and with time and commitment on the part of our patients and our practitioners, we get fantastic results.

Acne is a devastating disease affecting teenagers and adults alike. Approximately 80% of teenagers have acne at some stage with around 20% developing scarring. It is not so much the skin disease as the psychological effects, which can have a profound and long lasting effect on confidence and self esteem.

Acne is caused by a build up of dead skin cells and natural oils that stick together and block the pores. The acne bacteria then feed off this mixture which becomes irritated and inflamed.

Acne comes in 2 basic types and varies in severity from individual to individua,

1/ An inflamed condition normally associated with soreness, redness, swelling, pus formation etc…

2/ A non inflamed condition usually accompanied by blackheads or white heads.

What can aggravate Acne?

* Lifestyle – Inadequate sleep or drug or alcohol use.
* Stress – Physical, emotional or job related
* Climate – Humidity induces excess excretion
* Physical Contact – Touching the affected area or hats and headbands
* Diet – Foods high in iodine (salty snacks) or excess sugar. A well balanced diet is essential
* Hormonal Fluctuations – Birth Control Pill, pregnancy or seasonal changes
* Cosmetics – Wrong choice of products.

None of the above are the single cause of Acne but they can certainly exacerbate it.

Next time I will discuss some of the basics, in terms of treatment.

Thanks
