What To Do When Your Skin Reacts To A Product

by Tuesday, February 4, 2020

It can be difficult to know what to do when your skin has an unexpected reaction to a product. Whether it’s a brand new product you’ve never used before, or an old faithful that your skin has all of a sudden decided it doesn’t like, we’ve got the top tips you should follow if you are experiencing a reaction…

1. Identify the product causing the reaction

Often when you’ve had a reaction to a product, you just instinctively know the culprit responsible, but if you don’t know straightaway, start to eliminate products gradually until you identify the problem causer.

If you experience more severe reactions such as swelling or difficulty breathing, you should seek urgent and immediate medical attention.

2. Apply a cold compress

Skin reactions can leave your skin feeling hot and looking red. A cold compress can provide an instant soothing action, whilst also reducing redness.

Cold constricts the blood vessels so that less blood goes to the surface of the skin, therefore helping to reduce inflammation and swelling.

3. Ditch your ‘active cleanser’

When your skin is in tip top condition, an active cleanser with exfoliating acids such as Glycolic or Salicylic, can provide incredible skin benefits, helping to remove dirt, oil and dead skin cells. However, when your skin is inflamed or compromised, an active cleanser might cause more damage and further impair skin’s natural barrier.

When you’re experiencing a skin reaction, try removing your makeup with a gentle milk cleanser such as LABthetics Conditioning Milk Cleanser, which is formulated with Sunflower oil, Almond oil and Glycerine to gently remove makeup and debris, leaving skin feeling clean and fresh without stripping skin’s own natural and protective oils.

For your second cleanse, you can either go in with the cleansing milk for a second time, or opt for a cleanser like Image Skincare The MAX Stem Cell Facial Cleanser, which is an acid-free, sulfate-free and paraben-free formula with Plant derived Stem Cells, Oat Kernel and Hydrolized Rice Protein, which work together to balance and optimise skin’s natural pH.

4. Re-hydrate & restore optimal moisture levels

When skin is inflamed and dealing with a reaction, it needs simplistic ingredients that are going to support and bring it back to normal.

Mesoestetic Post Peel Crystal Fiber Mask is perfect for inflamed and reactive skin thanks to its ability to restructure the hydrolipidic film, restore optimal levels of skin moisture and elasticity to the skin.

Made up of crystal fibre, an innovative material for medical use based on 3D nano-fibers, the mask is 100% natural, safe and hygienic. It fits the lines of the face perfectly, with an occlusive effect that improves permeability and the increases the effectiveness of the active ingredients.

5. Apply a barrier cream

Formulated specifically for post-procedure skin, Mesoestetic Mesohyal Post-Procedure Gel Cream create a barrier when applied to skin, protecting it from external aggressors that could further inflame reactive or post-procedure skin.

The light-textured and oil-free formula stimulates cell repair mechanisms, provides an anti ageing action and prevents the degradation of skin’s natural Hyaluronic Acid levels, making it a great recovery cream for skin experiencing a reaction.

6. Skip the foundation

Although it can be tempting to apply foundation in an attempt to cover up the redness, try and go makeup-free to allow your skin time to recover from the reaction.

If you have a big meeting at work or a date planned, opt for Oxygenetix Oxygenating Breathable Foundation, which conceals flaws whilst also healing the complexion in a gentle formula that’s safe for those with acne, rosacea and psoriasis. Find your shade match with the Oxygenetix Foundation Colour Match Card.
