What is Micro-Needling?

You only have to click on online patient forums such as 'Realself' to discover just how popular non-surgical treatments are becoming. Advances in procedures mean more and more people are choosing to opt for the natural results achieved with Aesthetics.

With the increased popularity of these treatments, comes the great responsibility of the practitioner that you're trusting to treat your face. Once you've succumbed to the idea that less is more, the search begins. Trends are difficult to avoid but should be left where they belong on the catwalk. Fashion has no place in aesthetics.

Trying to divert away from the current buzzword or trend is easier said than done, which is why understanding the basic principles of treatment will allow you to discover that quite often, old treatments are re-formulated and re-branded to offer an updated version of a classic.New treatments may come and go, but when it comes to ageing there is one main aim: collagen stimulation. Increasing the production of collagen to improve skin's structure for a plumped and smoother complexion. We all love a good chemical peel every now and again to encourage a healthy glow, but there is only so much stimulating we can do using epidermal techniques. If we want to target the origin of skin cells, we have to go a little further than just skin deep.

Welcome to the world of Micro-Needling

Don't be put off; the clue is in the name “ “micro “ the needles are incredibly small, even my Trypanophobia* patients have had this procedure!

How does it work?

In effect, we are creating a superficial injury on the skin but in a controlled environment to encourage the wound healing response. It is this wound healing process that triggers the production of new collagen to form, creating fresh new skin cells. This makes for a revolutionary treatment for scars, wrinkles and fine lines.Micro-Needling can look a little like a torture device when watching treatments of hand held rollers “ a metal wheel device covered in tiny needles that is rolled over the skin. However, practitioners are now in many cases referring to using motorized micro-needling pens to improve precision.

Micro-Needling devices such as Dermarollers are still a good part of my clinical practice and have their benefits. However, in cases of localised treatment I often opt for the micro-needling pen. This is particularly useful in mature patients whose aim is to slow down premature ageing.

Why Micro-Needling?

The device allows for a precise depth to be selected, normally between 0.5-1.0mm to ensure the correct level in the skin is targeted. The vibration of the pen also means there is minimal discomfort for the patient and in most cases, topical anesthetic is not required.

What happens after treatment?

Immediately after treatment, the area will be red and may feel a little like sunburn. However, the recovery time is short and in effect easier for the patient to go about their daily routines without disruption.

The action of the needling itself is a vital part to the procedure, but results can be enhanced by using a cocktail of active ingredients to further stimulate skin and achieve further improvements within the skin. For example we use a selection of ampoules that are regulated to work on strengthening elastin, hydrating the tissues and of course enhancing that ultimate goal of collagen synthesis. Our unique and bespoke Micro-Needling facial has been designed by our expert practitioners, as a result of increasing demands for a natural and effective anti-ageing pathway.
