The Key to Anti Ageing: Retinol and Sunscreen

The Key to Anti Ageing: Retinol and Sunscreen

Recent BBC One documentary, 'The Truth About Looking Good' explored structure of skin, analysed different moisturisers and discovered the only over-the-counter product dermatologists use on their own skin.

At Face the Future, as we are an advanced skin care clinic and online skin care retailer, we see a huge demand for anti-ageing treatments and products that achieve real results. So it's no surprise that anti-ageing was at the centre of the BBC One documentary. Presenter Cherry Healy summarised the programme by saying “if you really want something that works “ that tackles wrinkles and ageing “ it's suncream and retinol. And we couldn't agree more!

What is Retinol?

Retinol is the technical name for Vitamin A and is an outstanding skin care ingredient when the aim is treating and preventing ageing. Retinol can help to diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, improve skin tone, increase skin firmness and fight the effects of environmental aggressors.

Consultant dermatologist Dr Anjali Mahto, who featured on the programme, referenced an American study where the use of 0.1% retinol over a four-week period, led to participants seeing an improvement in fine lines, wrinkles and pigmentation. If it's good enough for dermatologists, it's good enough for us!It's important to slowly build up usage so the skin can develop some tolerance. Start by using once or twice a week and gradually increase to use every other night. For more information on how you should be using Retinol, read our quick guide.

Sunscreen

We all know what sunscreen is and how important it is in protecting skin from harmful UV rays “ that's nothing new. However, the BBC programme highlighted sun exposure as more damaging than smoking and pollution. Dermatologist and Professor Chris Griffiths, who featured on the documentary, stated that around three quarters of lines and wrinkles are caused by sun damage. If you are guilty of only applying sun protection whilst laying by the pool on your summer holiday, you need to change thatFAST!As the undeniable answer to anti-ageing, Retinol and Sunscreen are a hero duo that should be included in all skin care routines.
