Back Acne: The Road To Clear Skin

Back Acne: The Road To Clear Skin

Although June is Acne Awareness Month, this skin condition is one of the most common that we treat at Face the Future, so EVERY month is Acne Awareness Month for us! According to NHS figures, “80% of people aged 11 to 30 are affected by acne, with about 5% of women and 1% of men have acne over the age of 25.

Acne is a very common skin condition that affects most people at some point in their lifetime; in fact we have seen a substantial increase in adult acne cases at our clinic over the last decade.

We are experts in skin and can treat acne no matter where it's located. If you have acne on your back, or “bacne as it's often referred to, you don't have to wait for it to clear on its own. Our in-clinic treatments and the right skincare products can help you see clearer skin more quickly.

What is acne?

Acne is an inflammatory condition caused by a blockage of excess sebum mixed with dead skin cells. This leads to a plug in the follicle causing papules, pustules, nodules or cysts to form as the skin becomes congested and aggravated.

What causes acne?

Although lifestyle, hygiene and stress all play a big part in worsening the condition, the main cause of acne is due to a hormonal imbalance within the body.

Many studies have shown that acne can lead to poor self-esteem, anxiety or even depression if left untreated, which is why we take pride in our approach to treating not only skin but the patient too.

How to treat acne

Acne-prone patients will often experience a build-up of dead skin cells, multiple breakouts and deep or superficial scarring. There are a few essential and proven ingredients to look out for when treating acne...

Benzoyl Peroxide: This helps to kill the bacteria that causes acne. Used daily, it can help control back acne and reduce flare-ups.

Vitamin A: Unclogs pores, repairs and normalises skin function.

Salicylic Acid: Eases inflammation, unblocks pores and reduces oiliness.

However, when using any of the above ingredients you must ensure you are protecting your skin against the environment and always wear an SPF of at least 50 all year round. Remember to avoid picking or squeezing spots as this can worsen acne and cause scarring.

Treating 'Bacne'

Treating back acne at home can be difficult as it's a hard to reach area. At our clinic, we treat the entire area of concern and encounter scar revision once the acne has cleared up.

The tried and trusted brand we use is DMK, which uses active ingredients to kill bacteria, smooth out skin texture and minimise breakouts entirely. The number of treatments recommended as a course varies dependent on symptoms and each individual patient.

Products to use at home

Our expert clinicians recommend a thorough and tailored homecare regime to help clear acne, although maintenance treatments may be needed for severe cases.

As well as the DMK home use products - that may require some assistance in applying when treating back acne at home - you can also use Clinisept Plus Aftercare to neutralise any grime, dirt or bacteria on the skin. It comes in an spray formula for easy to use anti-microbial action.
