For someone who’s worked pretty much tirelessly in the ‘skin’ industry for over 15 years, seeing a significant number of patients every single day, home working has certainly been a big change…and a challenge!
After the obligatory first few days of feeling sorry for myself and wondering how on earth I’m going to manage without my daily dose of patient interactions and all things skin, I have just about managed to get myself in a fairly nice routine and I have resigned myself to a substantial amount of time ‘locked down’.
I’m lucky, as although I live alone I’ve got my Cockerpoo puppy keeping me active. I can’t tell you how much pleasure this little pooch gives me, she’s a laugh a minute and gives me a bucketful of unconditional love. She also helps me tick off my daily exercise quota but I’m also trying to pick up on my January 1st resolution to try Yoga. I don’t think April is too late to start, I’ve only missed the first 3 months of the year!
Surprisingly after 3 or 4 morning Yoga sessions in a row, I’m starting to see why people get addicted. I’ve started off simply with 30 minutes a day and I’m loving it, although pooch does manage a much better downward dog than me!
Lockdown has made me prioritise my healthy eating and I’m taking the opportunity to reduce my tendency to carb overload (and we all know too many carbohydrates equates to too much sugar, which is a BIG no for our skin). I’m trying to eat as fresh and local as possible, but again I’m pretty lucky and have a little local store that’s done really well continuing to provide fresh produce. I must admit, wine is my downfall and so far, despite all my resolutions to cut down, I’m not having much success. I’m stuck in a ‘couple of glasses a night’ mode but I’m trying, I promise.
A really good friend bought me The Daily Stoic Journal for Christmas and I’ve just picked this up, explored a little and started journaling. Now, this is completely alien to me and I do have a little giggle at myself but believe me, these stoics knew a thing or two and in the words of Marcus Aurelius: “When you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive – to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to love.” Never has this felt more relevant and we definitely have to strive to find the pleasure in those things that often pass us by.
So onto skin, after all I’m a skin geek at heart so we couldn’t possibly miss this part out…
I’m pretty regimented when it comes to my daily skin routine, after years of struggling with pigmentation in the form of melasma, I’ve always known consistency is paramount. I use darn good cosmeceutical products (from Face the Future of course) including those from top brands such as ZO Skin Health and Mesoestetic, which keep my skin in tiptop condition. I never over treat my skin and always take care not to disturb the delicate acid mantle that can lead to tight skin and inflammation.
I use my microneedling device – MTS Dermaroller 0.3mm – at least 4 times a week. The skincare products I use are amazing for texture and tone but microneedling is responsible for keeping my skin firm, helping to stimulate collagen and elastin and increasing penetration of products.
Good skin is a commitment, there’s no doubt about it and good products aren’t that easy to find. But once you’ve been advised properly on the best products to use for your skin, it’s amazing to see the changes. Find out how we can help you below…
I also want to mention that I’ve been makeup-free for nearly 3 weeks and I can’t tell you how amazing that feels – it’s liberating!
So hang on tight guys, it’s tough out there, (especially when we have people close to us struggling with this horrible virus or working on the front line, putting themselves at risk day after day). So try and find some space to look after yourself and if needs be, simplify your routine, but try to find pleasure in the little things and take each day one at a time.
