Premature Ageing

Premature ageing, as characterised by symptoms such as pigmentation, sun spots, fine lines, wrinkles and sagging skin, is effectively a loss of structural integrity within the skin. As we age, the skin’s matrix becomes thin and the skin loses its bounce.

Ultraviolet exposure speeds up this process by disrupting the normal architecture of connective tissue within the dermis. UV decreases collagen and elastin and alters the cross linked structure of collagen and elastin fibres within the dermal extracellular matrix. Abnormal material containing elastin and fibrillin accumulates and appears to occupy areas of lost collagen: this is called solar elastosis.

As premature ageing and sun-damage is a result of structural destruction and deterioration in the normal functioning of skin, we approach this condition by revising old and damaged tissue, rebuilding the skin and facilitating optimal function. We revise the decline in processes that occur when the skin starts to age and by strengthening the skin’s underlying matrix, we encourage the skin to function like a young and healthy skin.
