    What is acne?

Acne is a common skin condition that can either be inherent and genetic or can be caused by external factors, such as hormonal fluctuations, stress, medications, hot or humid climates and irritating cosmetic ingredients. It causes spots to develop on the skin, usually on the face, back and chest.

The condition can range from mild blackheads and whiteheads to inflamed pustules and cysts, which if not identified and treated successfully can cause additional distressing repercussions, such as damaged skin, pigmentation and scarring.

Acne is a complex condition and it is only with the right levels of assessment, treatment and support, that a positive result can be achieved. At Face the Future, we have developed a number of in-clinic treatment programmes and home-use acne product regimes to get the very best out of your skin. What is ageing skin?

As we get older, elements of our skin such as collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid begin to degenerate, cellular turnover diminishes and our skin becomes depleted of essential nutrients. This means that our skin can begin to look tired and there are more noticeable changes in texture, tone and structural integrity.

This ageing is influenced by two factors: intrinsic ageing (linked to our genes and family history) and extrinsic ageing (related to environmental factors such as sun damage, diet and lifestyle). Intrinsic ageing can be more difficult to tackle, although both types of ageing can be corrected and in the case of extrinsic ageing, some of the influencing factors can often be reversed.

With this information in mind, it’s important to look at age management of the skin as a comprehensive approach, considering nutrition and lifestyle as influences and not just temporarily fixing surface problems. At Face the Future, we have developed a number of in-clinic treatment programmes and home-use age management product regimes to get the very best out of your skin. What is Pigmentation?

Pigmentation / Hyperpigmentation is a common skin condition where some areas of the skin turn darker in colour and is usually caused by an over activity of the skin pigment, melanin.

Types of pigmentation vary from freckles and solar lentigines (age or liver spots) to Melasma, Chloasma and PIH (Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation) but although the causes and severity vary, all are exacerbated by sunlight.

    Melasma and Chloasma

Closely related to hormonal changes and the sun’s rays and often covering large patchy areas and darkening during the summer months or with exposure to sunlight, Melasma can also be associated with a change in contraceptive pill, IUD or hormone patch or higher levels of oestrogen during the menstrual cycle. Chloasma is usually pregnancy-related and is often referred to as the ‘pregnancy mask’, although it can develop on areas of the body other than the face.

    Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation

PIH can be a result of acne, when areas of the skin have been damaged by spots or picking of the skin. The condition can also be caused by traumatic scars, surgery scars, or quite often, poor skin care regimes or aggressive skin treatments.

Pigmentation is usually harmless, but can cause significant emotional distress. It’s only with the right levels of assessment, treatment and support, that a positive result can be achieved. At Face the Future, we have developed a number of in-clinic treatment programmes and home-use pigmentation product regimes to get the very best out of your skin.
