Sun Damage Part Two

sun-block-helioSo, if we have a basic understanding of the damage that can be caused by UV Rays, what measures can we take to help protect the skin from further damage?

Use a good sunscreen.  There are many excellent sun screens on the market and it is important to find one you like, that feels comfortable on your skin.  Sunscreens have improved massively over the last few years and I particularly like the Danne Montague King and Heliocare sunscreens.  Both provide excellent protection, include antioxidants, are non greasy and do not leave a white residue on the skin.  Sunscreen should be re applied on a regular basis, to ensure safety and efficacy.

Eat plenty of antioxident rich foods, that is foods, containing Vitamin A, C and E.  Taking a Vitamin supplement can also help provide additional protection to the skin and help in the repair process.
Limit sun exposure to sensible levels and keep out of the sun rays at peak times, usually between 12pm and 3pm.

Wear protective clothing, such as hats, sunglasses and long sleeved shirts.

Ensure that any medication or vitamin supplements you take, don’t exacerbate the effects of the sun.  Also, some chemicals in cosmetics and perfumes can cause additional irritation and damage.

Stay tuned for part 3 on my Sun Damage blogs.
