Four Tips For Fighting Oily Summer Skin

Four Tips For Fighting Oily Summer Skin

This week we've been going through an unexpected heat wave. Although us Brits spend the year complaining about the cold weather and the endless rain, when we get a few days of heat and sun, we can't seem to help ourselves having a bit of a moan.

As much as I try not to grumble, there's one thing that I simply cannot bare in this heat my skin! Make up free days by the pool on holiday seem to be okay, but trying to maintain a full face of make up and office wear leaves my oily complexion looking like a big ball of shine. I do get oily all year round, but I dread this time of year when the inevitable oil slick occurs, so here are my top tips for fighting oily summer skin.

Switch your cleanser

Generally, I use the DMK Deep Pore Cleanser, but excess oil production leaves me with a lot more congestion and blackheads, so I like to switch it up for something a little stronger. Containing pore-busting Salicylic Acid, the DMK Acu-Klenz ensures my pores don't get clogged and lead to nasty breakouts.

Don't be too harsh

Trust me, at the end of a hot summer's day when your skin is feeling like a greasy mess, I know how tempting it is to want to use strong exfoliants to scrub away the excess oils and dirt. However, this will cause way more problems than that initial squeaky-clean feeling is worth. With all traces of oils removed from the skin, your skin will begin to overcompensate with sebum production to prevent skin becoming dry, putting you right back where you started. I like to use the Jan Marini Skin Zyme Papaya Mask as a once a week try to gently exfoliate and unclog the pores.

Oil free SPFs

SPF is a crucial part of your daily regime, but definitely shouldn't be forgotten at this time of year. However, many of us with oily skins tend to fear the thick, greasy feeling of sunscreen on the skin, but it's no excuse for skipping this important step. My year round SPF of choice is the Image Skincare Prevention+ Daily Matte Moisturiser SPF 30 as this oil-free formula also contains oil-absorbing ingredients to regulate shine throughout the day.

Ditch the make up

This is the ideal as it allows your skin to breathe, but I know that it's not always practical, and this is where I fail to take my own advice. A mix of existing blemishes and post-acne marks on my skin mean that stepping out of the house bare faced is a big no-no, so in this weather I like to use the Oxygenetix Foundation. Designed for post-treatment skin, it provides a good amount of coverage without that thick, heavy feeling on the skin. The breathable formula is great for preventing the pores from clogging.
