After returning from a fantastic two weeks in South Africa, it’s a good time to reflect on the pros and cons of good old UVA rays.

We know that the suns rays help with Vitamin D synthesis and the production of calcium for healthy bones and teeth.

We also know that the suns rays give us a ‘feel good factor’, helping us feel better on an emotional level. Many people feels the effects of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and feel the loss of sunlight in a negative capacity.

However, I still find it amazing, when on holiday, to witness the number of people who really do, over do their sun exposure and end up with quite serious burns, blisters and oozing skin.

Apart from the pain, discomfort and inconvenience of sunburn, the long term implications of sun damage are far reaching. Not only does sun damage have some serious implications in relation to health, there are also the implications associated with ageing and the negatives associated with damaged skin.

So, what are the facts???

*UVC – the O Zone layer filters out UVC rays, which causes serious damage to DNA.

*UVB - these rays penetrate the epidermis and cause burning. These rays oxidise the fats in the cell membrane and ruin their protective function. This causes redness and inflammation and can, if penetration is deep enough and prolonged, cause pre cancerous changes to the cells DNA.

*UVA – these rays penetrate deep into the dermis, damaging collagen and elastin and causing irreparable damage to the connective tissue of the skin. UVA can be more insidious than UVB, as it is problematic, even on cloudy days or those bright winter days when we assume, incorrectly that we are safe from sun damage.

Stay tuned for part 2 on my Sun Damage blogs.

Acne is a complex and frustrating skin condition, made worse by the unrealistic promises made by many of the over the counter so called ‘Acne Cures’.

Danne offers a real solution to Acne but it is not a ‘quick fix’ solution. It takes time, patience and commitment to rediscover a skin that is healthy and glowing.

By adhering to the stringent protocols, clear skin is possible but be patient, it takes time to solve a problem that may have existed for many years.

Generally, the Danne Acne Prescriptives, consists of 12 treatments undertaken over a six month period but this is not set in stone. Sometimes clearance can be achieved sooner and occasionally, if the Acne is complex, clearance may take longer. It is also absolutely essential to adhere to any home care protocols and products recommended.
This is not a miracle cure but does give a very real and successful alternative to the often complex medication protocols offere by GP’s and Dermatologist.

Additional advice:

• Increase Water Intake
• Avoid Sugary Foods
• Increase Omega 3 and 6 intake (DMK EFA)
• Do not over cleanse the skin
• No artificial exfoliator
• No additional products, that are not recommended by your practitioner
• No sun beds

Home Care (guide only, consultation recommened):

Am – Morning regime:

• Acne Wash
• Herb and Mineral Spritz
• Beta Gel
• Moisture Balance
• Sunblock
• 2 – 4 DMK EFA Capsules

Pm 1 – Evening regime:

• Acne Wash
• Herb and Mineral Spritz
• Beta Gel
• Moisture Balance
• Benzyl Peroxide

Alternate the evening routine

Pm 2 – Evening regime:

• Acne Wash
• Herb and Mineral Spritz
• Retosin or Revise A

Benzyl Peroxide, from the Danne acne products line, is essential to this programme; however do not over use it as it is possible to develop an allergic reaction to it. Allergy can be uncomfortable with the skin becoming red, inflamed, swollen and very itchy. If this happens, stop using immediately and ring your practitioner.

Benzyl Peroxide can make your skin dry and flaky, however this is an acceptable part of the programme and though annoying, is nothing to worry about.

If skin is very cystic or inflamed, Benzyl Peroxide can be kept in the fridge. If the skin is iced prior to application, inflammation is reduced and the Benzyl can penetrate exactly where it needs to be. The skin then gradually warms up, flushing out toxins and helping with healing.

Retosin and Revise A can also be problematic and cause some dryness and irritation. If any acute problems occur with this product, please contact your practitioner, as this product is pivotal to recovery. There are two strengths of this product and it may be that the product is to strong for your skin.

Rosacea is a skin disease that causes redness and swelling on the face. Often referred to as adult acne, Rosacea often begins with as a tendency to flush or blush easily and it progresses to persistent redness in the centre of the face that gradually involves the cheeks, forehead and chin. As the disease progresses small capillaries and tiny pimples begin to appear on and around the reddened area. Unlike acne, there are no comedones or milia. When first developing, it may come and go on its own, then when the skin starts to stay reddened and pimples and enlarged blood vessels become visible, it will need clinical treatment.

The pimples cause a watery pus and the skin is usually accompanied by trans-epidermal water loss and possibly seborrhoea. A more advanced condition, called Rhinophyma, usually affects males rather than females and involves the development of a bulbous nose and puffy cheeks. Sometimes, with Rosacea, the eyes become gritty and reoccurring conjunctivitis can become problematic.

Children do not get Rosacea and woman are more prone to it, than men. It has been associated with menopause but this is not proven. Similarly, some research indicates the presence of a small mite, (Dermodex Folliculorum) in some patients with Rosacea but not in others. There is also some evidence to suggest that an impaired gut function may be causative (maybe from taking long term antibiotics) but again this is not sufficiently researched to be definitive. What we do know however is that everyone who suffers from Rosacea is fair skinned and usually a Fitzpatrick 1 or 2, with some type of damage to the acid mantle, the protective coating of the epidermal skin layers.

Rosacea is a frustrating condition but with time and effort it is possible to lesson the external symptoms and in some cases eradicate the problem. By using a Danne prescriptives ‘in clinic’ and ‘at home’ system and incorporating Intense Pulsed Light we can achieve measurable success with this frustrating problem.

Rosacea sufferers can also make things a little easier on themselves by avoiding certain trigger factors. Although hot drinks, alcohol, spicy foods and caffeine do not cause Rosacea they can certainly aggravate it and should be taken in moderation, if at all. It is also extremely important to wear a sunblock and avoid extremes of hot and cold and these will have a negative effect on the skin. Avoid vigorous rubbing or scrubbing of the skin and exfoliants are an absolute no no. Avoid products and cosmetics containing perfumes and other synthetic ingredients and use hair spray sparingly.

What is rosacea?
Rosacea is a skin condition characterised by a reddening of the cheeks, nose, chin and/or forehead. It may also include the appearance of papules and pustules or acne-like pimples. While it is very common, affecting millions of people throughout the world, many of those with rosacea don’t even realise they have it.

Who gets rosacea?
For the most part, rosacea affects those with fair skin. While rosacea can affect both men and women, it’s nearly three times more common in women. Symptoms tend to appear around or after the age of 30.
How do I know if I have rosacea, and not just acne?
Self-diagnosing rosacea is not recommended since it shares some of the symptoms of other skin conditions. But if you are experiencing facial redness, flushing or acne-like pimples, a discussion with your clinician will help you establish whether or not you have rosacea, and how best to treat your condition.

How does the Rosaciear System work?
Obagi® Medical Products, the leading skincare company in the medical provider channel, now brings you an effective way to manage your rosacea. The prescription based Rosaclear System provides gentle skincare to calm your inflamed, irritated skin with a specially formulated treatment regimen, that is non-comedogenic, so it won’t clog your pores.

The Gentle Cleanser soothes your skin while helping to remove bacteria and other irritating residues.

The Metronidazole Topical Gel USP, 0.75% (prescription only and only available by visiting our clinic for a consultation) is indicated for topical application in the treatment of the inflammatory papules and pustules associated with rosacea.

The Hydrating Complexion Corrector protects and moisturizes your skin, while helping to reduce the appearance of redness by utilizing multiple calming agents and light-reflecting minerals.

The Rosaclear System also offers the Skin Balancing Sun Protection SPF 30, a specially formulated, chemical-free, tinted UVA/UVB sunscreen, which easily blends with your skin to help reduce the appearance of redness and blotchiness.

How is the Rosaclear System better than other treatments?
The Rosaclear System is the only complete system that incorporates a therapeutic prescription component, as well as products that effectively reduce and minimize the visible redness and blotchiness associated with rosacea. Calming agents, such as licorice, aloe, lavender and sea whip, are also used to soothe your skin, while light-reflecting minerals balance your complexion.

How do I get started with the Rosaclear System?
If you think you have rosacea, talk with our clinicians about the benefits of the Rosaclear System. Once you start using this complete therapeutic system, you’ll enjoy a clearer, calmer, more balanced-looking complexion.

If I have rosacea, how do I treat it?
Currently, there is no cure for rosacea. Although most existing therapies only provide temporary relief from the symptoms, Obagi Medical offers a more complete therapeutic treatment with the Rosaclear System. In just a few simple steps, it protects and moisturizes your skin, calms and soothes your symptoms, treats acne-like pimples and reduces the appearance of redness and blotchiness, leaving your complexion clearer, calmer and more balanced-looking.

The benefits of the Obagi Rosaclear System:

* The only complete therapeutic rosacea system
* Treats the symptoms while protecting your skin
* Reduces the appearance of redness and blotchiness
* Gentle, non-comedogenic formulations
* Easy to use

Our online special offer pack (with FREE bag) includes the Gentle Cleanser, the Hydrating Complexion Corrector and the Skin balancing sun protection which are essential to help with your rosacea. However if you feel your rosacea is severe, we would recommend visiting our clinic to get the Rosaclear System, including the prescription Metronidazole Topical Gel USP, 0.75%.

For more information, call our clinic today on 0113 282 3300.

We deal with hundreds of clients every month who suffer from acne. On occasions some of the people we see have medium to mild acne and advanced acne treatments aren’t needed, they just need to use the correct products.

At Face the Future, we stock paramedical skin products that actually work and by following 3 simple steps, you can have your acne looking better by following the correct program.

Using the simple regime put together by our acne specialists, we have seen many clients achieve fantastic results:

Step 1: Cleanse your face with a deep cleansing wash

With warm water, gently wash your face then, apply a small amount of a suitable deep cleansing wash and spread evenly across your face, then rinse with warm water and pat dry. A deep wash penetrates deeply into the skin to relieve the pressure and soreness of acne. Look for a natural, non alkaline cleanser for this stage.

Step 2: Apply a benzoyl peroxide based cream or lotion
Many acne cream manufactures provide a benzoyl based cream, but make sure you don’t get a watered down one so check the ingredients. For mild acne, a 5% strength is usually suitable, however 10% strength creams are available too, however the 10% is usually for people having in clinic treatments. Benzoyl peroxide oxygenates skin, and studies have shown applying this can improve your acne. Apply some Benzoyl cream to your hand and spread it evenly across the acne affected area. Allow about 5 minutes for this to dry, then follow step 3.

Step 3: Moisturise
Using benzoyl can make your skin dry or flaky, so using a good balanced moisturizer can keep your skin hydrated and prevent this happening. Apply a moisturizer to the areas you have applied the benzoyl cream and let it soak in.

It is amazing how these simple steps can improve your acne in under a week, but it is essential to follow this regime on a morning when you get up and on a night before you go to bed.

We recommend the products below from the following brands, however it is essential to come and visit us for a free consultation before using any of these products to see which is best for your skin.

Danne Montague-King (for medium to mild acne)
There are a number of Danne products that can help your acne problems, depending on the severity of it, but for medium to mild acne sufferers using Acne Wash, Benzoyl Peroxide 5% and Moisture Balancer following the 3 step process listed above can significantly improve your acne.

Body acne is a very common problem for men, and especially for adolescent boys, with the main areas affected being the back and the chest. This can also be a problem for some women. This problem can often affect day to day activities and self esteem.

From our experience with body acne sufferers who have visited the clinic, from talking to them we have found they are often very self conscious and avoid taking their shirt off in public, which in the summer months when you are looking to go on holiday can be quite a problem. Acne on the body and chest can also become very painful. If the condition is left untreated, as well as pain and discomfort it can result in serious skin damage such as scaring.

Here at Face the Future, we use the latest Danné Montague King acne treatments to combat chest, back and body acne (as well as facial acne), but firstly, let’s look at the key causes to chest acne then the ways of treating this skin problem.

Main causes of body acne:

Sebaceous Glands (oil glands) are larger and most numerous on the mid back, chest and mid section of the face. Then we have what Danné Montague King believe is the biggest culprit in acne occurring on the chest area, the Pilo Sebaceous duct or the hair shaft. Sebum from the oil glands flows up the hair shaft onto the top of the skin. Here it mixes with various other lipids and natural moisturising factors creating the Acid Mantle and Micro Flora.

Propionbacteriun (P Acnes Bacteria) in the right environment is part of the normal Flora and resides in and around the hair shaft.

This converts the triglyceride oil into free fatty acids; it is these fatty acids that create the skins pH Acid Mantle.

If the Acid Mantle is impaired in any way the P Acnes Bacteria doesn’t have its normal food source and starts to create trouble in the hair shafts and oil glands. This causes inflammation and infection, along with a fast cell turn over and an abnormality in the cell division where the cells keratinise too early and stick to the walls of the hair shaft. This results in blockages (micro comedones) and becomes the perfect breeding ground for the P Acnes Bacteria which attaches to the bottom of this mass and becomes inflamed forming into a cyst or a pimple.

So now we have established a basic understanding that acne on the chest is an abnormality in normal skin functioning. This results in inflammation and infection, and in the case of acne on the chest, (which occurs in the hair shaft) the condition develops like a form of folliculitis.

The hair shaft part of this problem is often misdiagnosed.

An effective treatment program must address the inflammation and infection deep within the hair shaft

Danné skin revision system for body acne:

Step 1: Cleanse the chest with Hydra Louffa – a body wash product that effectively cleanses and exfoliates in one. It contains botanical extracts that possess antibacterial, anti-inflammatory properties as well as properties that loosen any accumulation of dead cell material.

Step 2: Alkaline wash solution is applied to the area being treated; this swells the hair shaft before sinking deep down into the hair follicle, dissolving the hair and any mass or infection. The solution then clears and eliminates the Acne infection and the blockages deep within the ducts.

Step 3: After the Alkaline wash solution is removed the area is neutralised to re-establish the pH balance of the skin. ‘Icing’ is performed over the top of the neutraliser. Icing is a great addition to any treatment to further reduce any inflammation.

Step 4: Once the neutraliser is removed specialised drops are applied to suppress melanin production. This solution also has a very healing and anti-bacterial effect. Once these drops have been applied the Danné Body Enzyme Mask is applied on top. This is one of Danné Montague-King’s unique Transfer Messenger Enzyme Formulations specifically designed for the body. This restores optimal skin functioning, promoting repair and recovery.

Step 5: The Mask is removed and the chest has the appropriate finishing products applied to restore the precious Acid Mantle and re-establish homeostasis.

The number of treatments required will vary depending on the severity of the condition.

Improvements will be seen even after as little as two treatments. The client will be prescribed an appropriate home maintenance programme consisting of products to prevent the reoccurrence of the Acne.

The power plate works by a series of vibrations, or pulses, which the body them counteracts by using corresponding muscles to keep balance. This constant muscle tension then helps muscles become ‘long and lean’, improving not only cellulite but also body silhouette and shape.

Additional benefits include an increase in muscular strength, flexibility, bone density, circulation and the body’s ability to heal itself.

This intensive training negates the need for extra weights and the body is never at risk of being overloaded. This means that the power plate is suitable for most people, including high level sports athletes, those simply wishing to improve health and fitness and elderly people experiencing circulatory problems or osteoporosis.

If you’re interested in our cellulite treatments, feel free to come into the clinic for a FREE consultation.

Look forward to seeing you.

Just imagine having the results of liposuction without the surgery – welcome to LASER LIPO. It’s good for skin tightening, cellulite reduction, skin rejuvenation and inch loss and can target stomach, lower face, hips, thighs, baby bulge, male breasts and the dreaded “muffin top” to name but a few.

It’s a completely pain free experience and involves laser paddles being placed on the skin. The laser penetrates the skin just deep enough to reach the layers of fat and when the light hits the fat cells it causes pores to form on the cells which in turn causes them to spill out. Water, glycerol and fatty acids then move into the interstitial space beneath the fatty layer in the skin. Then further water, fatty acids and glycerol spill out causing the adipocyte cells to be reduced in size. The lymphatic system then removes the fat through the venous system where they are processed in the same way as fatty foods that are digested.

The good thing is that there is no down time, the procedure is pain free its non invasive and immediate results can be achieved. Its safe and can result in fantastic inch loss.

For more information call us today on 0113 282 3300, where we will be happy to give any further advice and explanations.

He had suffered from acne from the age of 15 and decided it was finally time to look for a solution that would get a permanent result. Amjid is currently a student studying law, however he is in his last year and will be looking for jobs after he has finished his course. He felt that this was the best time to invest in his skin so that he would feel more confident when it comes to finding a job in such a professional industry.

We have devised a 12 week programme for Amjid which will include treatments to stop the pustules and papules from coming and then once we have cleared these we are going to carry out a range treatments that will fade the scars that are present as a result of suffering from acne for the last 7 years.

After two sessions and starting his acne prescriptive range of products Amjid has noticed a significant difference. He is not suffering from as many breakouts and the scars appear to be fading. We have lots of different methods for fading scars at face the future therefore will choose the best one to ensure Amjid gets the best results possible.

We will keep you posted on Amjid’s results.
