Too much sun can damage the skin, protect with Heliocare!

HeliocareSun-damage accumulates over time and it is a lifetime of sun exposure, rather than recent sunbathing that adds to your risk.  Most of us enjoy sitting in the sunshine – and there is evidence that limited sunlight can be good for us, helping the body to make Vitamin D that keeps our bones healthy.  But, like many things in life, too much of a good thing can sometimes be harmful. Too much sun can damage the skin, and this may only start to become apparent later in life.

Nobody is going to gad about every single day in the height of summer wearing a long-sleeved shirt and a wide-brimmed hat. Our winters are far too long and depressing for that. But a reasonable degree of precaution against sunburn and excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) solar radiation makes absolute sense. This is especially true for fair-skinned people and children, whose natural level of protection is reduced.

Over the years, sunlight exposure ages the skin leading to dryness, brown blotches and wrinkles. More importantly, UV radiation also promotes the development of skin cancer.
More of us are taking more frequent holidays in hotter climates and that is fine. But we cannot avoid the fact that any suntan at all is evidence of permanent skin damage, and UV radiation that penetrates the skin can damage cellular DNA, which, when it fails to self-repair, can become cancerous.

DNA damage initially brings about the sunburn reaction, slowly leading to tanning, due to the release of a brown pigment known as melanin, and some skin thickening. Together, this thickening and tanning offers some protection against UV damage, but only at the expense of the UV damage that begins and maintains that process. People with fair skins, freckles and red hair, who always burn and rarely tan, are therefore the ones who are most at risk.

So what can you do to reduce the hazards of sunshine if 90 per cent of cancers are preventable?

One way is to keep out of the sun in the middle of the day, as this is when the sun’s rays are strongest.  You can also wear a hat that has a flap to protect the back of your neck and loose fitting long-sleeved clothing. Everyone here at Face the Future uses Heliocare products to protect their skin.

The damaging effects on our skin can be minimised by using adequate sun protection against both UVA and UVB radiation and these come in the form of topical and oral products.

FACE THE FUTURE FAVOURITES:

Heliocare Oral Supplement Capsules
These capsules contain Fernblock, which triples the skin’s resistance from the sun and protects areas on which it is impossible to apply a cream or gel like the hair and eyes for example.  Taking just one capsule a day before sun exposure can help prevent sun damage and prickly heat.

Heliocare Gel SPF 50
This sun block is easily absorbed into the skin and is great even under make up.  It protects against both UVA and UVB radiation so apply to the face and hands to protect from both the burning and ageing effect on the skin.

Heliocare Compact SPF 50
This factor 50 sun protection comes in the form of a compact in both Light and Brown, Oil Free and Normal.  A firm favourite with women as its both sun protection and foundation in one.  Its great to use on holiday when re-application is ideal, as it comes with a sponge and mirror for ease of applying throughout the day when out and about. Also available as an oil free compact – Heliocare Oil Free Compact SPF 50.

Visit the shop or call the clinic today on 0113 282 3300 for more information on Heliocare. Plus, don’t forget you can save money with our Heliocare Bundles!

Medik8 Growth Factor Serum Now Available

Medik8 Growth Factor Youth Activating Serum is the must have anti-ageing product for 2012, and is now available at Face the Future.

Developed by Medik8 Research Scientists the innovative Triple Filtered Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF) has been formulated for those wishing to maintain or restore a younger looking skin.

WHY EGF?

Epidermal Growth Factor is the substance which occurs naturally in our skin.

As we age the level of EGF in the skin declines causing the skin to renew itself less frequently and lose its youthfulness and elasticity.

The youth activating complex works by promoting cell renewal & stimulates the growth of fibreblast cells responsible for the formation of collagen & elastin.

Just a few drops of this powerful serum smooths out lines and wrinkles for a more refined texture, enhances skin tone and gives back the skins natural radiance and luminosity.

For the best results 5/6 drops of the Serum should be applied to the face after cleansing once a day.

To accelerate the results we recommend using alongside a Dermaroller twice a week.

Medik8 Growth Factor Serum is available to buy online or in the clinic at Face the Future. For more information call us today on 0113 282 7744.

SilDerm – For Prevention and Treatment of Stretch Marks

You work hard to keep your skin looking healthy and beautiful. But no matter what you do you are still at risk of stretch marks-deep scars in the connective tissue caused by rapid stretching of the skin. Some call them to badge of motherhood, most of us call them very annoying.

You may already know that that the skin has 3 main layers:

1) The top Layer or the epidermis contains layered of flattened dead skin cells that work together to form a semi permeable membrane. This epidermal barrier helps keep water and many chemicals outside of the body but lets other chemicals pass through when they are absorbed into to bloodstream.

2) The next layer, the dermis, is made up of tiny capillaries, nerves, hair follicles and glands that secrete protective oils onto the skin. It also contains the collagen networks that give the skin its strength and elasticity.

3) The deepest layer, or subcutaneous tissue, is where you will find the larger blood vessels, fat cells and supportive connective tissues. This layer is helpful in temperature regulation.

When you cut yourself with a knife or sharp edge, the wound heals with an abnormal scar that looks different and is weaker than normal tissue. Stretch Marks or Striae Gravidarum, are a unique type of scar because they only involve the dermis-there is no break in the epidermis itself.

They happen during times of rapid growth such as puberty, pregnancy, excessive weight gain or even with weightlifting.

They also appear to be related to an increase in your body’s steroid hormones which are produced during pregnancy. Stretch marks can occur anywhere but are more likely to appear in areas where fat is stored such as abdomen, breasts, hips and buttocks.

When the skin stretches rapidly in these areas, tension builds on the collagen matrix inside the dermis and it eventually starts to tear, new collagen grows back but it lacks the smooth regular appearance of normal collagen. Instead there is a disorganised, chaotic structure with significant inflammation the result is the dreaded stretch mark.

FACTS

About 2 thirds of women develop stretch marks during puberty

Around 70% of women get stretch marks during pregnancy

Your risk is higher if your have fairer skin, if you are a teenage or young mother, if stretch marks run in your family and if you developed them during puberty.

SilDerm for Stretch Mark prevention is the only product clinically proven to reduce the chance of getting stretch marks and the severity of stretch marks.

The ingredients in SilDerm have been tested for safe use in pregnancy are lactation and ideally should be applied twice daily to abdomen, breasts, thighs and buttocks.

After reviewing published medical research the doctors at SilDerm have identified an effective topical oil. In a stringent clinical study of over 80 women a combination of three ingredients were shown to significantly decrease the risk of stretch marks.

2 of the main ingredients are:

GOTU KOLA; an extract from the centella asiatica plant that stimulates fibroblast cells to reduce collagen

TOCOPHEROL; a natural vitamin E- a strong anti oxidant that helps prevent tissue damage.

For many years the best kept beauty secrets have been kept in expensive clinics and kept secret by the A list celebrities. But not any more, you can purchase these products from our online shop, just go to www.facethefuture.co.uk/shop.

The Environ AVST Range

If you are looking for a fantastic Vitamin A based moisturiser, then the Environ AVST range might be just what you are looking for.

The Advanced Vitamin Skin Therapy Range is from the Environ Skin Range. They have been formulated by Dr Des Fernandes, a well know plastic and reconstructive surgeon.

Knowing the harmful effects from free radical damage including UV radiation, stresses of modern day living and other pollution, Dr Fernandes formulated this comprehensive range, which includes antioxidants Vitamins A, and C, Beta-Carotene and plant extracts.

The AVST Range comes in five different strengths, and clients must always start on Number 1 and progress to Number 5 over months of use. This is because the range is more intense the higher you go and if not used correctly may cause an outbreak.

The Range is fragrance free and although Vitamin A is a natural sunscreen, you must also wear additional sunscreen if you are exposed to the sun. A suitable sunscreen to use alongside Environ AVST would be Environ RAD or Heliocare SPF 50 Gel.

Keep Your Holiday Tan for Longer

We all love the feeling, just arrived back from holiday, you feel refreshed, relaxed and look fab with a glowing tan. But unfortunately it doesn’t last very long. One day back at work and you feel as if you’ve never been away and your tan starts to fade within a week.

If you would like to try and hold on to that summer glow alongside moisturising your skin on a regular basis you could try taking Omega 3 supplements.

Re-search has shown that essential fatty acids keep our skin moisturised from within, preventing flaking and patching and resulting in a longer lasting tan.

Start taking your Omega 3 supplements as soon as your holiday is booked and you can double your dosage whilst away and effects can be seen within 7-10 days.

It is essential that you use a good source of Omega 3. Some supermarket brands are not a very good source therefore results will not be as good.

Face the Future stock the Advanced Nutrition Omega 3 Supplements online or pop into clinic to pick them up! We also stock the Advanced Nutrition Skin Omegas that combine omega 3 and omega 6 for that extra boost!

Revitalash, Tried and Tested!

Here at Face the Future, we are always keen to get the latest products for our clinic and online shop. One product that caught our eye was Revitalash Eyelash Conditioner. Most people will be dubious as to whether a product like this actually works, so here’s the feedback from one of our regular clinic clients who has been using the product for the last few months!

Having short eyelashes, I had been using single eyelash extensions, which originally started as a holiday thing for me. You know, not having to put mascara on my short stubblies, and suffering two black eyes!

As much as I loved the look my false eyelashes gave me (plus the time saved not having to apply the black clumpy stuff) they added wear and tear to my real lashes and I was left with even less lashes than before.

Kate at Face the Future recommended a new product they had just got in stock, called Revitalash and suggested I gave it a try but I had to be patient. It had some good reviews on the internet, so gave it a go.

I know in the past I have suffered irritation and redness when using eye make up remover products, so I didn’t know how this product would react on contact with my delicate eye area, but I had no problems whatsoever. I used a fine brush application to the top layer of lashes, (like using an eye liner) every evening before bed for about three months before I started to notice the length was really starting to show.

The thickness of my lashes had become more noticeable after six months and I have been using Revitalash now for 9 months, with no problems at all.

I also bought a new mascara which really shows up my new lashes. I am not saying that they are as long as false ones, far from it, but I have got to a point now where I don’t wear false lashes any more. I am still using the first tube of Revitalash, but when it runs out will be definitely be buying more to keep my lashes at the lovely new length! I’m glad Kate recommended this to me, I would say it’s worth every penny, basically so far cost £10 a month, with a fab result. Any sceptics out there, give it a go!

Revitalash is available in 2 sizes, 2.4ml for £59.99 or the larger 4.10ml for £84.99.  The product is available to buy in clinic or at our online shop.

Sunburn Fades, Sun Damage Doesn’t

Over exposure to sunlight is the greatest challenge facing our skin. Sun or photo-damage is caused by ultra violet radiation in the forms of UVA and UVB.

UVA
Makes up 95% of UV. UVA penetrates deep into the dermis and damages skin… even on a cloudy day or in winter!

Collagen, elastin and underlying skin architecture are all damaged by the release of free radicals or reactive oxygen which is caused by UVA.

UVA seriously reduces the skins natural defence mechanisms and can cause skin cancer, as well as causing pigmentation problems and skin reactions.

UVB
More prevalent on sunny days during the summer. It only penetrates the epidermal layer of the skin, and is what will give you a tan.

Whilst tanning UVB can cause reddening, burning and epidermal damage. Most importantly UVB also reduces the skins natural defence mechanisms and can cause skin cancer.

HeliocareWhat you can do:

To keep your skin looking healthy and looking young all year round, we recommend the use of Heliocare Sunscreen.

Heliocare is a range of sun protection products that provide advanced protection on the skin and from within. The only UV protection range to contain Fernblock Photoimmunoprotection Technology.
