New research shows that taking a multi-nutrient supplement during pregnancy may improve the health of pregnant women and their babies.

The study findings are timely, coinciding with the launch of the Pregnancy Pack from Advanced Nutrition Programme, the nutritional supplements range devised by Patrick Holford to support anti-ageing and wellbeing therapies in salons, spas and clinics.

The supplement trio is ideal for women to take when planning for a baby as well as during and after pregnancy, to give the child the best possible start in life. Other studies support the benefits of both Probiotics and Omega 3, included in the pack along with SKIN Vitality 1.

Nutritional consultant at Advanced Nutrition Programme, Lorraine Perretta says that if you are stressed or don’t exercise, or don’t get enough sleep, then you should consider helping your digestion by supplementing enzymes.

“If you don’t absorb vitamins and minerals efficiently because you lack sufficient digestive enzymes, your brain and body won’t receive the vital bio-chemical messages that confirm you have taken in enough food. Consequently, you’ll continue to feel hungry and you’ll eat more!” says Lorraine.

If you or your clients are struggling to slim it could be worth trying Digest-Pro from Advanced Nutrition Programme, a blend of digestive enzymes and herbal extracts that aids digestion, assists with weight loss and may reduce bloating. It includes three key enzymes to break down protein, carbohydrate and fats, plus an enzyme for digesting lactose, the primary sugar in milk.

Digest-Pro is available at our online shop for just £18.95. Click here for more information.

Good skin days can quite often seem a long way away when battling through winter weather. Constantly moving from hot to cold environments can have a detrimental effect on our skins, one minute it feels tight, dry and uncomfortable and the next it feels dull, lifeless and spotty.

So are there any emergency measures we can take to ensure our skin doesn’t take too much of a battering, as these icy conditions persist.

As well as using a good, consistent skin care range such as Danne Montague King or Environ, this is the perfect time to consider the other essential ingredients of ‘good skin’.

1. We often turn to thicker moisturisers in the winter months as we feel our skins need a little extra TLC but one of the down sides of this, is that thick moisturisers can stop our skin shedding effectively which in turn can leads to dull flaky skin or spots. Try not to overdo the moisturising. Our skin does have its own natural moisturising factor, that adjusts to climate changes, so we don’t need to overdo things.

2. We all have enzymes in our skin that act like little ‘pac men’ eating away at the build up of dead skin and debris that accumulates on the skins surface. But to activate these enzymes we need water. So try and increase water intake, even if it’s warm from the kettle, with a bit of lemon, to keep these enzymes working effectively.

3. Use a good sunscreen. Even though its not hot and sunny, the suns UVA rays are just as active in the winter months and can still cause long term ‘ageing’ damage to skin. There are many excellent sun screens on the market and it is important to find one you like, that feels comfortable on your skin. Sunscreens have improved massively over the last few years and I particularly like the Danne Montague King and Heliocare sunscreens. Both provide excellent protection, include antioxidants, are non greasy and do not leave a white residue on the skin.

4. Eat plenty of antioxident rich foods, that is foods, containing Vitamin A, C and E. Taking a Vitamin supplement can also help provide additional protection to the skin and help in the repair process. We love Patrick Holford’s (Advanced Nutrition Programme) Skin Vitality Packs, which give us all the essential nutrients for good skin. Perfect to give skin an extra boost during this troublesome weather.

So if you’re serious about giving your skin an additional boost during the winter months, try our Advanced Nutrion Programme Skin Vitality Packs. They are currently on offer in our online shop, click here to view the products.

Prepare to party!
With all the parties coming up it’s easy to forget about your diet and nutrition! You need to remember that although the goodies are extremely tasty they are packed with high contents of salt and sugar. Before you go out have some quick but nutritional so that you won’t be as tempted to pick at the party food all night and end up piling on the pounds and giving you spots.

Avoid salt!
Try not to use salt in your cooking or add extra salt to your food. Also try not to eat salty snacks such as crisps and peanuts. Instead add lemon juice to your cooking- lemon juice creates a salty flavour as the taste buds are close by on the tongue- sounds bizarre but really works!

Keep skin glowing with omega 3!
During the winter months skin tends to dry out a little bit. Try to increase your oily fish intake such as mackerel, sardines and salmon. Unsalted nuts and seeds such as almonds and sunflower seeds also increase your essential fatty acid intake. Seeds can be added to salads, yoghurts and porridge or just nibbled on through out the day as a snack. Omega 3 is an essential supplement to take as our body needs it but doesn’t make it. Omega 3 helps to keep the skin supple.

Give your body time to digest your food!
Christmas is an easy time to indulge on lots of snacks. But one thing that will help your digestive system is to make sure you chew all your food properly, (sounds simple but you would be surprised at the amount of people who don’t). Chewing your food really well helps to produce saliva and will help your stomach to digest the food without causing indigestion as the stomach then produces a range of enzymes to break down foods.

Improve your intake of vitamin c!
If you take vitamin c every day it will improve your immune system to stop you getting coughs cold and runny noses! Let’s face it… none of us want to look like Rudolph and the works Christmas party do we? Having a smoothie packed with fruit every day is a good wake to increase your vitamin c intake or vitamin c supplements can be taken!

Avoid foods that irritate the gut!
Avoiding things like alcohol. Coffee, tea and aspirin as these make the stomach produce too much acid and irritate the gut wall. All meat fish and eggs can exaggerate over-acidity.

Reduce caffeine intake!
Christmas is a exhausting time with shopping partying etc, but try not to be tempted to drink too many drinks with caffeine in them. Things like coffee, tea, energy drinks and coca cola contain high amounts of caffeine. Once the boost from the drinks has worn off they make you feel more tired than when you started in the first place.

Water Water Water
I’m sure we all know that we should drink 2 litres of water per day. But how many of us actually do it? It’s great as a pre party drink as it flushes the system and helps to dilute other toxins such as alcohol.

As media attention is once again focused on a fresh outbreak of Swine Flu, now is the time to promote the benefits of Vitamin C Plus as an essential immune support.

Patrick Holford has recommended Vitamin C after speaking to renowned experts on viral infections. Dr Thomas Levy, who has provided the definitive proof in his book ‘ Vitamin C, Infectious Diseases and Toxins: Curing the Incurable’, is one of the world’s experts in effects of vitamin C on viruses. Here’s what he says, “I have not found any flu virus for which vitamin C does not exert a virucidal effect, as long as enough vitamin C reaches the virus, such as in any acute infection.”

Says Patrick “The ideal amount of vitamin C for any flu is to start with 3 grams immediately, then 1 gram regularly thereafter.”

If you order extra stock of Vitamin C Plus you will not be alone. Many clients have taken Patrick’s advice and purchased more Vitamin C as a result. Since the outbreak of Swine Flu in the UK the sales of Advanced Nutrition Programme Vitamin C products have increased by 65%!

Advanced Nutrition Programme Vitamin C Plus are currently on special offer for a limited time in our online shop – click here to visit.

Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) are vital for healthy skin, hair, nails and wound healing to name but a few. So where do we get these little wonders from I here you ask – well – largely from vegetables, seeds, nuts and cold-water fish.

To ensure you obtain sufficient EFAs your diet should include…

Fish:
Two to three servings of fresh salmon, mackerel (preferably not smoked) herring and sardines per week.

Nuts and seeds:
Walnut and pumpkin, sesame and sunflower seeds, one to two tablespoons – mix, and store in fridge then grind and have either with yoghurt or salad

Oils:
Flax, sunflower, corn, evening primrose and starflower oils – one to two tablespoon of flaxseed oil daily. Use oils on salads or vegetables but for cooking use only olive oil as others become unstable when subjected to heat.

You’re likely spending much more time indoors and less time outdoors, not to mention wearing more clothing to stay warm. With less time spent outside and a minimal amount of exposed skin, you may have given up on your daily use of sunscreen. After all, if you’re rarely outside and there’s no visible sun, what’s the point, right? Wrong! Although the sun may not be shining and the hours of daylight are fewer than during spring and summer, abandoning your daily sunscreen habit would be a skin care (meaning anti wrinkle) mistake. Here’s why:

Even when you’re clothed in layers to defend against the cold, chances are good that a portion of your face, if not all of it, is still exposed. That means sun damage is still taking place if you didn’t apply sunscreen. Whether it’s the middle of January or you’re heading to the beach in June, you need sunscreen 365 days a year. It’s not just UVA and UVB rays but that visible light spectrum that can cause those premature wrinkles.

It’s somewhat easier in the summer months as the visible sun (though not much in the UK) reminds us why we need to protect our skin. But what you must remember, even when the weather is bad is that are three main facts about UV damage;

1. Sun damage is about your skin seeing visible daylight not just “sunshine”.
2. Sun damage begins within the first minute of unprotected exposure.
3. The bad rays of the sun penetrate windows (think car journeys and windscreens)

Sunscreen is an (if not the most) important part of your skin car regime. Whether your a younger skin type or more mature, it is the best way of preventing wrinkles and maintaining skin health.

There are some fantastic sunscreens on the market today and most of them are very reasonably priced, so there’s little excuse not to protect.

Our choice is Heliocare (Factor 50), a fantastic non greasy formula that costs £19.99 – call 0113 282 3300 for more info or to purchase.

So, we know some of the foods that are good for our skin…..but what about the bad guys;

Refined sugar and carb snacks may give you a quick buzz, but this burst of’ energy’ is not good for your system. Very simply explained it puts the blood sugar out of balance and your body sends out more insulin to cope with this. If this happens regularly it results in the decreased ability to remove excess blood glucose from the bloodstream.

This then finds it way into the tissues and starts to create a low grade chronic inflammation that causes the tissue to age prematurely. It will also cause long term systemic problems with other organs and a continued intake of highly refined sugary foods will have a detrimental effect on general health too – possibly resulting in diabetes, cardiovascular disease and Alzheimers.

So avoid that chocolate bar or bag of crisps and have an apple instead.

I’m often asked by patients if any ‘type of food or diet’ can help improve the general condition of skin. The answer to this one is a very definite ‘yes’ and so I’ve dug out a few articles written by Patrick Holford, one of the U.K’s top nutritionalists, to give you some basic facts on the relationship between diet and skin health and some top tips to help improve and maintain ‘good skin’.

A good diet consisting of fresh, untreated foods is essential for the health of your entire body, not just your skin and reducing the speed at which it ages or degenerates in any way. Given the importance of keeping your digestive tract and liver in good working order for healthy skin, a diet should include foods naturally high in fibre, e.g. raw or lightly cooked veg and fruit, wholegrains, root vegetables, lentils and beans, well chewed and eaten when you are relaxed.

A recent report in the British Journal of Nutrition stated that ‘dietary bioactive compounds – including Vitamin A and C, carotenoids, polyphenols, selenium and zinc – have beneficial efects on skin health.’ It also noted that the use of functional foods and oral supplementation for improving skin conditions is increasing.

Eating plenty of anti-oxident rich foods everyday is therefore a key dietary factor – red/orange vegetables such as sweet potatoes, carrots, apricots and watermelon, purple foods such as berries and grapes, green foods such as watercress, kale, alfalfa sprouts and broccoli, ’seed’ foods such as peas and wholegrains, fresh nuts, seeds and their oils, onions and garlic.

So remember;

The rainbow rule…foods that offer a range of colours to keep you healthy

Fresh and Raw….vegetables and fruit are best when just picked and eaten raw.

Water and Fibre….fresh fruit and vegetables have a high water content so are great for increasing your water intake and cleansing the gut with undigested fibre.

Good Luck
