Different Types of Tooth Whitening:
Tooth whitening is an advanced technique that works by applying a bleaching agent to the teeth, which then breaks down staining on the outer surfaces of the teeth. The agent used is either Carbamide Peroxide or Hydrogen Peroxide, which once applied to the teeth are converted to oxygen, which breaks down the staining.
There are several techniques for teeth whitening:
Clinical Bleaching:
This method of tooth whitening requires use of high percentage bleaching agent applied to the teeth for 15mins, with the process repeated as required. The process is performed in clinic by a registered Dentist and it usually takes an hour. Protective materials are placed around the lips and gums to protect them from the bleaching agent. The bleaching agent used is usually 30-38% Hydrogen Peroxide.
Home Bleaching:
This method utiltises the weaker bleaching agents over a longer period of time. The bleaching agents range from 10-15% Carbamide Peroxide or 2-7.5% Hydrogen Peroxide. Impressions are taken of your teeth and custom trays made, which you can wear during the day or overnight as instructed by the Dentist.
‘Laser’ Whitening:
Well known ‘Laser’ techniques include Zoom and Britesmile, which involve bleaching gels placed on the teeth and the use of a light to activate them. The use of lights to activate bleaching gels is a contentious issue and studies have argued for and against their use.
Generally, the most influential factors in the effectiveness of tooth whitening are the start shade of the teeth and the strength of the bleaching agent used. Non-biased, controlled trials have shown that the use of a bleaching light does not improve the whitening effect compared to use of the bleaching agent by itself. Bleaching lights may accelerate the whitening process by speeding up the activation of the gels, but the end result is the same.
The system which suits you depends on your needs and expectations. If you want a quick process then clinical bleaching may suit you. If you want a slower, more controlled approach home bleaching may be more appropriate. This is often used before clinical bleaching to prepare the teeth and maximize the whitening effect.
